Potato Chip S'mores! đ
And more delicious things I discovered in June
Two things before I get to some very important snack #content:
I am very mad at America right now.
What the Supreme Court has done in recent weeks is terrifying and heartbreaking and I want to grab Clarence Thomas by the cheeks and scream in his face until his eyes bleed.
I love potato salad.
Just because the Supreme Court is rolling back our rights doesnât mean we canât do and eat things that make us happy this holiday weekend. I wonât be thinking of it as celebrating Americaâs birthday, Iâll be thinking of it as carbo-loading for the impending fight to preserve and reinstate vital human rights. As you tuck into a bowl of potato salad or some grilled wieners over the next few days, I hope youâll consider donating to your local abortion fund or an organization like Shout Your Abortion.
Now, letâs talk about snacks!
In June I went camping for the first time in nearly two decades and it turns out I am very good at camping because look at what I made:
Yup, thatâs a sâmore made with Utz potato chips in the place of graham crackers. It was so fucking good, yâall. Crispy, salty, gooey, marshmallowy. Itâs the best food thing Iâve created since baking a mini pumpkin pie into a cupcake. I hope youâll try it the next time you make sâmores.
Also, while camping, I got stung by a bee!?!? ON MY BUTT!?!?
Also also, while camping, I did some light hiking through the Smoky Mountains and found this graffiti written underneath a bridge:
Did this person indeed mean to say chicken stripes? Or did they misspell strips? I think they misspelled strips. They are very mad about chicken strips and can you blame them? Nuggets are superior!
A few more tasty things:
đč The Sour Patch KidsÂź Slush Float at Sonic
Itâs so good! I was honestly a little surprised. The slush part is a very tart watermelon flavor that's nearly unsippable without some of the creamy soft serve to mellow it out. The crushed Sour Patch candy on top is a nice textural touch, too. Itâs a little bit ice cream sundae, a little bit ice cream float, and the perfect treat to break up a long day of driving on a road trip.
đ Lukas Volgerâs cookbook Snacks for Dinner: Small Bites, Full Plates, Canât Lose
Technically this was released in May but I didn't write about it then so Iâm writing about it now. Sue me.
With Snacks for Dinner, Volger wants people to rethink what a meal can be. Dinner doesnât have to be a hefty main course accompanied by some last-minute sides to fill out the plate. Dinner can be snacks! Finger foods! Fun!
Rachel Flax would be so proud.
Volgerâs recipes include Baked Brussels Sprouts Chips, Dates Four Ways (broiled with lime zest and mild chili, for example), Chewy-Crispy Tofu Sticks with Chili-Ginger Jam Dipping Sauce, and Caramel Apple + Cheddar Toasts.
Whatâs more, he made a playlist to go along with the book featuring Prince, Alvvays, The Staple Singers, Womack & Womack, and more. More cookbooks should come with playlists!
đ Burlesque of North Americaâs phá» T-shirt from Burlesque of North America
Mike Davis at Burlesque of North America has designed several super cute and fun foodie things â this colorful pillow covered in illustrations of snacks, this enamel pin of Death carrying a taco, and this enamel pin of an otter eating a bowl of ramen.
This spring he released a new T-shirt, one that pays tribute to phá».
My husband bought one for himself before I could buy my own. Can I still buy one? Even if he has one? I donât want to be one of those matchy matchy couples but, like, itâs a really good shirt. Damn you, Robby!
With that, I leave you with this, Sabziâs 2012 song about the best bowl of soup in the world:
Tell me about the delicious things you discovered in June! What was the best thing you ate? The best song you heard? I want to hear all about it.
